History
I went to some great lectures on the teaching of American History today and I was reminded of one of the truly great truths inherent in the study of the past. Individuals are history, each person affects the world in his own unique and important way, however small. Each person in the world also lives in history. Each of us is affected by the world in which we live and we frame our lives in that context. Historians constantly negotiate the interplay between the history made by individuals and the history that made those individuals. The balance that we find determines the way that we write about the past.
